About this place
Keya no Oto is a sea cave on the coast of Shima Keya, Itoshima, Fukuoka. It was designated a National Natural Monument in 1966 (Showa 41). It is sometimes written as "Keya Oto". Located on the northwest of the Itoshima Peninsula and facing the Genkai Sea, it is the largest basalt cave in Japan, 64 m high, 90 m deep and 10 m wide. Together with Genbudo and Nanatsugama, it is known as one of the Three Great Basalt Caves of Japan. Hexagonal and octagonal basalt columnar joints are well developed throughout the area.
