About this place
Hiraodai is a karst plateau of crystalline limestone, 370 to 710 m above sea level and with a plateau area of about 12 square kilometers, spanning Kokuraminami Ward of Kitakyushu, Yukuhashi, Kawara in Tagawa District, Kanda in Miyako District and Miyako, in the northeast of Fukuoka. However, the northeastern part of the area is not karst but consists of granodiorite. It is also the name of a district in Kokuraminami Ward. It is designated a National Natural Monument. The elevation is not very high, but the climate is colder than in the urban area of Kitakyushu, and in some years snow falls even in April.
