Overview
A rocky shore at Oarai, where the Kamiiso torii stands among the waves.
About this place
A coast in Oarai, Ibaraki. Selected as one of Japan's 100 Best Beaches and one of Japan's 100 Best White Sand and Green Pine Coasts. Because the coast faces due east, you can see the sunrise rising directly above the white stone torii in the sea (Kamiiso Torii), and it is also popular as a first-sunrise spot. It was once a place for seawater cures, and the poet Boncho Yamamura stayed here to recover from tuberculosis and ended his life here.
