About this place
Hinuma is a brackish lake in the Naka River system, spanning Ibaraki, Hokota and Oarai in Higashiibaraki District in central Ibaraki Prefecture. Hinuma lies in an area surrounded by the Higashiibaraki Plateau and the Kashima Plateau, and the Hinuma River, which has its source in Kasama upstream, and the Otani River and others flow into it. Downstream, the Hinuma River joins the Naka River and just beyond that opens to the sea. At high tide seawater flows back up the Hinuma River, making it a brackish lake where fresh and salt water mix. When the Naka River floods, fresh water flows into Hinuma, and topographically it can also be called a retarding basin.
