About this place
Onamiike (Onami no Ike) is a roughly circular crater lake 630 m in diameter and about 2 km in circumference on Mt. Kirishima in the northeast of Kirishima, Kagoshima Prefecture. It was anciently also written with a different character. It was formed when water collected in the remains of a crater formed by the volcanic activity of Mt. Kirishima about 40,000 years ago. A large amount of pumice erupted from this crater remains in the surrounding strata, and is called Iwaokoshi pumice. The pond is 11.6 m deep, dark blue-green in color, and so clear that the bottom is visible.
