Overview
In the grounds of Kamo Hachiman Shrine — a camphor held to be the largest tree in Japan.
About this place
A great camphor tree towering on the grounds of Gamo Hachiman Shrine in Gamo, Aira. About 1,600 years old and about 30 m tall, it was certified as the largest camphor tree in Japan in a survey of giant trees and forests carried out by the Environment Agency in 1988 (Showa 63). There is a large hollow in the root area. An autumn festival is held every year on the third Sunday of November.
