About this place
Meigetsuin is a Rinzai-sect Kenchoji-school temple in Yamanouchi, Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture. Its full name is Fukugenzan Meigetsuin. It is known as a place for hydrangeas, and as the Hydrangea Temple where blue hydrangeas bloom. It began in the late Heian period as Meigetsuan, founded to pray for the repose of Yamanouchi Toshimichi. The principal image is Sho Kannon, the founder (kaiki) was Uesugi Norikata, and the first abbot (kaizan) was Mitsushitsu Shugon. The tomb said to be that of Hojo Tokiyori is within the grounds.
