About this place
A cave in Kumamoto, Kumamoto Prefecture. It is where Miyamoto Musashi, who came to Higo at the invitation of Hosokawa Tadatoshi, wrote the martial arts treatise The Book of Five Rings in 1640 (Kanei 17), and it is on the hill behind Ungenzenji. A statue of Iwato Kannon is enshrined in the cave, and the wooden sword Musashi used in his duel with Sasaki Kojiro is preserved at Ungenzenji.
