Overview
A hot spring in Amakusa, with a legend that an egret healed its wounds here some 700 years ago.
About this place
Shimoda Onsen is a hot spring in Amakusa, Kumamoto Prefecture (formerly Higo Province). It is called Amakusa Shimoda Onsen with the place name prefixed, and even now is referred to with Amakusa attached, but the formal name is Shimoda Onsen, and locally and among other related organizations it is unified as Shimoda Onsen without Amakusa. It gushes from a boring down to 250 m underground. The hot spring's gushing mechanism is said to be closely related to the faults in this area and the structure called the Shimoda anticline seen in the underground strata (Himeura Group).
