About this place
Tsujishima is an island in Amakusa, Kumamoto Prefecture. It is an island at the northern tip of Amakusa Shimoshima, and in the past it was a peaceful island where hand-rowed ferries went back and forth across Hayasaki Seto. Its opening of the Tsuji Ohashi Bridge in Showa 50 (1975) made it more convenient, and more people visit the island by car, but the beautiful scenery of Amakusa-nada and its peacefulness are kept as of old. The origins of the island's name are told as 'interpreters (tsuji) of the Nanban trade lived here in the medieval period' and 'fishermen who mastered foreign languages by going far abroad to fish lived here.'
