About this place
Einotsurugi Shrine in Kumamoto Prefecture is an old shrine said to have been founded in 713. The enshrined deity is said to be the sea god Watatsumi, and it is also called Tsurugi Shrine. Believed to bring benefits for stomach and intestinal ailments, it is known for its stingray ema plaques and a seaside torii whose appearance changes with high and low tide. The Hassaku Festival on the first day of the eighth month of the old calendar coincides with viewing the Shiranui lights that appear offshore, and bustles with many tourists.
