About this place
Okoshiki Coast is a coast in Uto, Kumamoto Prefecture. It is known as a scenic spot with beautiful sand ripples (sand patterns) on the tidal flats that appear with the Ariake Sea's tidal range, and has been selected for 'Japan's Top 100 Beaches' and 'Japan's Top 100 Sunsets.' The name comes from a legend that the 12th emperor, Emperor Keiko, on his expedition to Kyushu (Tsukushi tour), was captivated by the beautiful scenery of this coast and stopped his palanquin (mikoshi) for a while to look at it.
