About this place
A water source in Uto, Kumamoto Prefecture, one of the Three Famous Springs of Higo. It is designated one of the 100 Famous Waters of Japan. Laid over 300 years ago by Hosokawa Yukitaka, lord of the Uto Domain, it is regarded as the oldest waterworks still in use, serving 120 households for domestic water. The original water pipes were clay pipes of Shiranui stone, and they have now been replaced with stone pipes hollowed out of Mamon stone.
