A shrine in Kashima founded in 1001, honouring a married pair of deities and seeming to float on the water.
About this place
Ukishima Shrine is a shrine in Kashima, Kamimashiki District, Kumamoto Prefecture, enshrining a couple deity. Its formal name is 'Ukishima Kumanomasu Shrine.' Locally it is affectionately called 'Ukishima-san.' To be precise it is not an island; the shrine sits on a part jutting into the pond like a peninsula, and seen from the opposite shore it looks like a floating island, reminiscent of Itsukushima Shrine. The surroundings are developed as 'Ukishima Shuhen Mizube Koen' (Ukishima Waterside Park).
