About this place
Ryokusenkyo is a gorge in Midorikawa, Yamato, Kamimashiki District, Kumamoto Prefecture. It is located at the source of the Midori River. It was also selected for the 'Kumamoto Top 100 Famous Waters.' It is the upper part of the Midorikawa gorge, with a gorge width of 100–200 m and a depth of about 50–200 m. This area is one of the few primeval forests in Kumamoto Prefecture (Seiwa Village Ryokusenkyo Primeval Forest), with conifers such as hemlock, fir and torreya, and broadleaf trees such as oak, beech and maple distributed over 40 ha. It is also known as a famous spot for autumn leaves.
