About this place
A former elementary school in the Minamata-Ashikita area of Kumamoto Prefecture. It has been featured on TV and elsewhere as a school on the sea. The small island in front (Hadakajima) is buried in the sea when the tide comes in and connects to land when it goes out, so you can walk across. At sunset, the silhouette of the school building and the small island stands out.
