About this place
Shimyo-in is the head temple of the Iwayasan Fudo-kyo sect in Kita Ward, Kyoto. Its mountain name is Iwayasan. Its temple name is Konkobu-ji. The principal image is Fudo Myoo. It is popularly called Iwaya Fudo. This temple is said to have been founded in the 1st year of Hakuchi (650) by En no Gyoja, regarded as the founder of Shugendo. It is then said to have been revived in 829 (Tencho 6) by Kukai at the imperial request of Emperor Junna. At that time, the principal image enshrined was a Fudo Myoo said to have been carved directly by Kukai at Emperor Junna's imperial request. This statue is said to be the oldest Fudo Myoo statue in Japan.
