Overview
A temple founded in 853, known for its principal Amida, who is shown looking back over his shoulder.
About this place
An old temple at the foot of Higashiyama in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto. It was founded in 853 (Ninju 3) by the priest Shinsho, and in 863 (Jogan 5) Emperor Seiwa granted it the official temple status of Zenrinji. The halls are linked by long corridors. The principal image, the Important Cultural Property Mikaeri Amida Nyorai, has the rare pose of looking back over its left shoulder. It is also known for its autumn leaves, and the view from the Tahoto pagoda is a highlight.
