About this place
Kayabuki no Sato Kitamura is a mountain village settlement in Kita, Miyama-cho, Nantan, Kyoto Prefecture. Many thatched-roof houses, which have now become rare, remain here. In the medieval period the settlement belonged to Yuge-no-sho, Kuwata District, Tanba Province, and was a mountain village whose main industry was forestry. The highway running through the settlement is regarded as one of the so-called Saba Kaido (Mackerel Road), lying midway between Kyoto and Wakasa, and many travelers came and went. Because of this background, the architecture and lifestyle of this settlement are said to have been influenced by various regions.
