Two rocks at Futami in Ise, joined by a sacred rope. At the summer solstice the sun rises between them.
About this place
The Meoto Iwa (Wedded Rocks), known since ancient times as a place to worship the sunrise. They are regarded as a torii gate from which to worship the sacred Okitama Stone about 700 m offshore and the sunrise. The male rock stands 9 m high and the female rock 4 m high, and the Great Shimenawa Ceremony takes place every year on May 5, September 5, and a weekend in mid-December. From May to July the sun rises between the rocks, and from autumn to winter you can see the full moon.
