Overview
Terraced paddies in Kumano, 1,340 plots on a slope, held to be among Japan's finest such landscapes.
About this place
Maruyama Senmaida is a group of terraced rice fields using the southwest slope of Mt. Shirakura (elevation 736 m) in the Maruyama district of Kiwa-cho, Kumano, Mie Prefecture. Though called "senmaida" (a thousand rice fields), there are actually about 1,340 terraced fields (7 ha) in a valley with an elevation difference of 160 m (elevation 90-250 m). The smallest field is only 0.5 m2. The terrace embankments are mainly stone walls built by nozura-zumi (rough stone stacking), a method often seen in western Japan.
