Overview
A hot spring in Tsu, long used to purify oneself before the pilgrimage to Ise.
About this place
The Sakakibara Onsen area in Mie. Located at the entrance to the Ise region, it has a history of an imperial prince bathing here to purify himself on a visit to worship at Ise Jingu. Sei Shonagon praised it in The Pillow Book with the line "the bath is Nanakuri no Yu," the god of Izumo is enshrined as the guardian deity of the hot spring, and many love poems remain. The water leaves the skin silky smooth, and some inns offer day-use bathing.
