About this place

Zenkoji is a non-denominational independent Buddhist temple in Motozen-machi, Nagano, Nagano Prefecture. Its head priests are the two offices of the 'Daikanjin Kancho' and the 'Daihongan Shonin', and its actual upkeep and administration are carried out by the Tendai and Jodo sects (described later). The principal image is the Ikko-Sanzon Amida Nyorai (Zenkoji Nyorai), said to be the oldest in Japan, and it is an absolutely hidden Buddha. In recent years the unveiling, said to take place once every seven years, is held with the stand-in principal image (maedachi honzon), and in front of the main hall the Ekochu pillar is erected, which is said to bring blessings when touched.
