About this place
Bessho Onsen is a hot spring in Ueda, Nagano Prefecture. It is a hot spring town at an elevation of about 570 m said to be the oldest in Shinshu, and it is also called 'Nanakuri no Yu' from the legend that Yamato Takeru opened hot springs in seven places and named them 'Nanakuri-no-Onsen' (hot springs that ease the seven hardships). Because old temples associated with the Shioda branch of the Hojo clan, such as Anrakuji, Joraku-ji, and Kitamuki Kannon, stand close to the hot spring town, it is called the 'Kamakura of Shinshu'.
