With Kenchoji in Kamakura, one of the oldest Rinzai Zen temples in Japan. It later became Soto.
About this place
Anrakuji is a Soto-sect temple in Bessho Onsen, Ueda, Nagano Prefecture. Its mountain name is Sampukuzan. Its temple-title is Gokokuin. The founder was Shokoku Isen. The principal image is Shaka Nyorai. It is known for having a national treasure octagonal three-story pagoda and for being the oldest Zen temple in Nagano Prefecture. According to tradition, it was built by Gyoki in the Tenpyo era (729 - 749), or founded in the Tencho era (824 - 834) of the Heian period, but its history before the Kamakura period is unclear. It is said to have been a Ritsu-sect temple at the end of the Heian period.
