About this place
Oshika Kabuki is a local kabuki (ji-shibai) handed down in Oshika Village, Shimoina District, Nagano Prefecture. A National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. It first appears in a written record in the Meiwa 4 (1767) work diary of the Maejima family, village head of Okawara Village, which describes local theater being staged in Oshika. Although amateur kabuki performance was prohibited in the Edo period, it was handed down in the form of votive plays and has been performed for 300 years as entertainment of the common people. Today, regular performances are held twice a year, in spring and autumn.
