About this place
Yakushi-ji is a head temple of the Hosso sect, a Buddhist temple in Nishinokyocho, Nara, Nara Prefecture. It has no mountain name. The principal image is the Yakushi Triad. It is one of the Seven Great Temples of Nanto. Its founder was Emperor Tenmu.
The history of Yakushi-ji begins in November 680, when Unonosarara (later Empress Jito), the empress of the then emperor Tenmu, fell ill, and Emperor Tenmu vowed to build this temple, praying for Unonosarara's recovery from illness.
