About this place
Todai-ji (English: Todaiji Temple) is a Japanese Buddhist temple in Zoshicho, Nara, Nara Prefecture, and the head temple (daihonzan) of the Kegon sect. It has no mountain name. The principal image is the Rushana Buddha, called the Great Buddha of Nara. Its founder (first betto) was Roben.
Its formal name is Konkomyo Shitenno Gokoku-no-tera, and it is a temple built by Emperor Shomu in the Nara period (8th century) with the full strength of the nation. The current betto (224th) is Koei Hashimura.
