About this place
Toshodai-ji is the head temple of the Ritsu sect, a temple in Gojocho, Nara, Nara Prefecture. It has no mountain name. The principal image is Rushana Buddha. Its founder (establisher) was the monk Ganjin (Jianzhen), who came from Tang China. It is the temple where Ganjin spent his later years, and has many cultural properties, including the Kondo and Kodo built in the Nara period. In 1998 it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara.
