About this place
Suzakumon (also read 'Shujakumon') was, in ancient times, the south-facing main gate of the palace city (Daidairi) of the grid-plan capitals such as Heijo-kyo and Heian-kyo. It was the most important of the twelve gates of the outer perimeter of the Daidairi. In the ancient capitals built on the model of Tang China's grid system, a palace city made up of the palace and government offices was placed at the center of the north side. It was called Heijo Palace in Heijo-kyo and Heian Palace in Heian-kyo, and was also called the Daidairi. The Daidairi had 12 gates on its four sides, each given the family name of a powerful clan.
