About this place
Fukuu-in is a Shingon Ritsu sect temple in Takabatakecho, Nara, Nara Prefecture. Its mountain name is Shunnichisan. The principal image is Fukukenjaku Kannon. It is known as a temple for cutting ties (enkiri-dera). According to the Kanke-bon 'Shoji Engi-shu' and other sources, Fukuu-in is said to have been built on the site of Ganjin's residence; and in the Konin era (810 - 824), before building the Nan'endo (octagonal hall) of Kofuku-ji, Kukai is said to have built a model of it at this temple.
