About this place
Takamatsuzuka Kofun is an ancient burial mound in the National Government Asuka Historical Park in Asuka Village, Takaichi District, Nara Prefecture. A final-period tomb built in the Fujiwara-kyo period (694 - 710), it is a two-tiered round mound 23 m (lower tier) and 18 m (upper tier) in diameter and 5 m high. It suddenly drew attention in 1972 with the discovery of brilliantly colored murals. The mound was provisionally restored in 2009 to its original shape and is open to the public.
