About this place
Omiwa Shrine is a shrine in Miwa, Sakurai, Nara Prefecture. It is an Engishiki-listed shrine (Myojin Taisha), the Ichinomiya of Yamato Province, and one of the Twenty-Two Shrines (middle seven). Its former shrine rank was Kanpei Taisha, and it is now a Beppyo Shrine of the Association of Shinto Shrines. It was formerly called Miwa no Mimoro-no-miya and Omiwa Omononushi Shrine. From the medieval period it was called Miwa Myojin and was the headquarters of Miwa Shinto, one of the Ryobu Shinto schools. In the Meiji period it was renamed 'Omiwa Shrine.' Mt. Miwa is its sacred mountain.
