About this place
Mitarai Gorge is a gorge in Kitakado, Tenkawa Village, Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture. It forms a gorge in the lower reaches of the Sanjogawa River, a tributary of the Tennokawa River in the Shingu River system, around the place where the Kawasako River joins. The Sanjogawa River, whose source is around Mt. Omine, passes through the Dorogawa Onsen area; the upstream side is relatively open along Prefectural Route Omineyama Park Line, but from around the Abu Tunnel the mountains close in and it begins to look like a gorge. A parking lot has been provided near the tunnel (Dorogawa-side exit), and a promenade has been laid along the gorge from there downstream to National Route 309.
