About this place
Kiyotsu Gorge in Tokamachi, Niigata Prefecture. Together with Kurobe Gorge and Odarugi Gorge, it is one of the three great gorges of Japan, where sheer rock walls on both sides of the river form a large V-shaped gorge, and it is designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. For the 2018 Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale the inside of the tunnel was renovated as an art work by MAD Architects. The entrance facility has a foot bath and a cafe.

● Fresh greenery: early May ● Autumn leaves: late October to early November ● Snow scenery: late December to early April ● National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument • Designated name / Kiyotsukyo • Date of designation / April 23, 1941 • Location / Tokamachi and Yuzawa Town ● Joshin-etsu Kogen National Park • Designated September 7, 1949 ● Feeling the coldness of the water is part of the concept of the work. The water mirror at the Panorama Station is shallow at both ends, so you can proceed to the back along the wall. If you go to the back of the water mirror, your feet may get quite wet depending on your shoes. We recommend bringing a towel. ● In winter, the foot bath at the entrance facility is closed. ● Time required inside the tunnel: about 40 minutes to 1 hour round trip (about 750 meters one way) ● Kiyotsukyo is a national park.
