About this place
Undoan is a Soto-sect temple in Undo, Minamiuonuma, Niigata Prefecture. Its mountain name is Kinjosan. Its principal image is Shakyamuni Buddha. It is also called Undoin (Kamakura Odzoshi). It stands in the Ueda estate, which covers the whole Minamiuonuma District. According to the temple's origin story and the Nihon Tojo Rento-roku, tradition holds that Fujiwara no Senbi-ni, the mother of Fujiwara no Fusasaki, built a hermitage and became its founder. Also, in the first year of Yoro (701), Fusasaki founded a nunnery to pray for the repose of his mother.
