Overview
Terraced paddies at Yamakoshi in Nagaoka, with terraced ponds for raising carp, stepping down the slope.
About this place
Terraced rice fields in the Yamakoshi area of Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, lined up like steps on mountain slopes. Our predecessors cleared the limited mountain slopes and secured water sources to make them. After rice planting is finished, young colored carp are released. In Heisei 15 it was selected as an important area of Cultural Landscapes (related to agriculture, forestry and fisheries) by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and in Heisei 29 it was certified as Japan's first Nationally Important Agricultural Heritage System.
