Overview
Huts at Myoban Onsen in Beppu. Straw is laid over the steam vents and bath mineral crystals form on it.
About this place
Straw-roofed huts for making yunohana (hot spring mineral deposits) in Myoban, Beppu, Oita Prefecture. About 50 huts stand in the geothermal zone, and production has continued since the Edo period. Steam of hot spring gas enters the blue clay under the huts and crystals form, and over 40 to 60 days it is collected, refined and dried into a product. The huts last three years at most and are re-thatched each time.
