About this place
A lighthouse in Sakanoseki, Oita, first lit on July 20, 1901 (Meiji 34), the oldest in the prefecture. It protects the safety of ships sailing the Hoyo Strait, and its second-generation lens is displayed at the nearby observatory Sekizaki Kaiseikan. It became unmanned in 1970 (Showa 45), and the inside is opened to the public once a year around November 1, Lighthouse Day.
