Overview
The site of a private school in Hita, opened by Tanso Hirose, which drew students from across Japan.
About this place
Kangien is a boarding private school founded in 1805 (Bunka 2) by the Edo-period sage Tanso Hirose in Hotta Village, Hita District, Bungo Province (now Hita, Oita Prefecture), which was shogunate territory. 'Kangi' is a word taken from the 'Shijing' (Classic of Poetry), meaning 'everything is fitting.' It embodies the principle of respecting students' wills and individuality. At Kangien, anyone could enter the school at any time, regardless of social status, if male, by paying the entrance fee and filling in the necessary items on the roster.
