About this place
Taizakokyo (Taizako Gorge) is a gorge in the upper and middle reaches of the Okudake River (also written with a variant character), a tributary of the Ono River, a Class 1 river system, in Taizako, Ogata-cho, Bungoono, Oita Prefecture. One of the geosites of the Oita Bungoono Geopark. Columnar joints are well developed in cliffs tens of meters high formed by the river carving away Aso welded tuff deposited by eruptions of Mt. Aso, giving a landscape very similar to Takachiho Gorge in Takachiho, Miyazaki Prefecture.
