A stone bath in Bungo-ono, of the old kind in which stone is heated to make steam.
About this place
A stone sauna in Ogata, Bungoono. A stone sauna is a kind of steam bath entered after filling a rock cave with steam; after a fire is kept burning in the cave for a day and night, the medicinal herb sekisho is laid down and bathers take in the rising steam. The cave is carved into welded tuff from a pyroclastic flow about 120,000 years ago, and the cliff has a Sanskrit character representing Amida Nyorai, suggesting it was a facility connected with Buddhism.
