Overview
A preserved townscape in Kurashiki, keeping traces of a port that prospered on the kitamaebune trade.
About this place
A preserved townscape district of a port town facing the Seto Inland Sea in Shimotsui, Kurashiki. In the Edo period it prospered as a relay trading port for cotton and herring meal carried by Kitamaebune ships, and as a post town for people making pilgrimages to Kompira in Sanuki. Merchant houses and herring storehouses of the time still remain and convey the atmosphere of a port town.
