About this place
Ikeda Zoo is a private zoo in Kita Ward, Okayama, Okayama Prefecture. The number of animals on display is about 90 species and about 450 individuals (as of August 2022). It was opened in 1953 (Showa 28) as 'Ikeda Sangyo Zoo' by Takamasa Ikeda, grandson of Akimasa Ikeda, a former lord of Okayama Domain, and his wife Atsuko Ikeda, fourth daughter of Emperor Showa. It became the present Ikeda Zoo in 1960 (Showa 35). One feature is that most of the zoo is in the mountains of Kyozan.
