About this place
The Katsuyama Townscape Preservation District is a townscape preservation district in Katsuyama, Maniwa, Okayama Prefecture. In 1985 (Showa 60) it was designated by Okayama Prefecture, the first in the prefecture. The area prospered as the castle town of the 23,000-koku Mimasaka Katsuyama Domain and as a transport stronghold on the Izumo Kaido and other roads, and many historic assets remain, including white-walled houses with lattice windows, storehouses with namako-kabe (sea-cucumber) walls, and the site of the Takasebune boat landing. A townscape preservation district improvement project was carried out by the former Katsuyama Town from 1986 (Showa 61) to 1990 (Heisei 2).
