A preserved townscape in Tsuyama on the old Izumo highway, with namako walls and latticed windows.
About this place
The Joto district, on the east side of the castle town of Tsuyama, facing the old Izumo Kaido. Buildings that keep their old appearance, with namako-kabe walls, sleeve walls, and insect-cage windows, line the street. There are Sakushu Joto Yashiki, whose fire watchtower catches the eye, and Joto Mukashi Machiya, preserving an Edo-period townhouse. It was selected as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 2013.
