About this place
Kichin Shrine is a shrine in Ranzan, Saitama Prefecture. Including this shrine, there are only a few shrines in Japan that enshrine oni (demons). It is said to have been founded in the first year of Juei (1182). It lies to the northeast of Sugaya Residence, the home of Hatakeyama Shigetada, a leading vassal of the Kamakura shogunate, and was founded to ward off the unlucky northeast direction. The Shinpen Musashi Fudokiko records, for Hirono Village, "Kijin Myojin Sha, held by villagers." At the Setsubun festival, people scatter beans saying "Fortune in, demons in, devils out." Here "devils" means bad things other than oni. About 10 minutes on foot from the west exit of Musashi-Ranzan Station on the Tobu Tojo Line
