About this place
A shrine in Koka, Shiga. Sugawara no Atsushige carved a wooden figure of his father Sugawara no Michizane himself and enshrined it as the Minakuchi Tenjin. It was first called Minobe Shrine and stood on the site of the present Toei Shrine, but was moved back to its present location in Ayano when Minakuchi Castle was built in 1633 (Kan'ei 10). The Edo shogunate made it the guardian shrine of Minakuchi Castle, and with the devotion of successive lords of the Kato clan, many stone lanterns have been dedicated.
