About this place
Mihonoseki Lighthouse is the oldest stone lighthouse on the San'in coast. It was built in 1898 (Meiji 31) at Mt. Umaki at Jizosaki, the eastern end of the Shimane Peninsula, under French guidance. It is designated a National Important Cultural Property. It has been selected for the '100 Lighthouses of the World' and 'Japan's 50 Lighthouses.' Because of its high historical and cultural value, it is designated an A-rank preserved lighthouse and was the first lighthouse registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property. The interior of the lighthouse is open to the public on Marine Day, the third Monday of July each year.
