About this place
Oni no Shitaburui is a gorge in Okuizumo, Shimane Prefecture. A V-shaped valley in the upper reaches of the Omagi River, a tributary of the Hii River, it was designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument on April 8, 1927 (Showa 2). Its formal designated name is Oni no Shitaburu. On April 17, 1964 (Showa 39) it was designated Oni no Shitaburui Prefectural Natural Park. The place name is said to be a corruption of 'Wani no shitaburu' in a passage of the 'Izumo no Kuni Fudoki.'
